Let them eat cake!

Here we are again. This is a wonderful cake, and was the top layer on our wedding cake. Unfortunately, I never got a piece of that one, as it seems everyone else also loved red velvet cake.

If you’ve never tried it, you’re in for a treat.

Enjoy!

Red Velvet Cake

Cake

  • 2-1/2 cups Flour, sifted 3 times
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 cup Soured milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1/2 cup Crisco
  • 3 tablespoons Cocoa
  • 4 oz. Red food coloring
  • 1-1/2 cups Sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Vinegar added to 1 teaspoon baking soda (let it fizz before adding)

Frosting

  • 3 teaspoons Flour
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1 stick butter

Instructions

Cake

Cream the Crisco and sugar together. Add the eggs, one at a time. Then add the vanilla and salt. Add the dry ingredients alternating with wet, scraping the bowl often while mixing.

Pour into prepared pans and bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes.

Frosting

Combine the flour, sugar and milk and cook until thick. Add the vanilla and butter, and cook until fluffy. Cool, and spread on the cake.

  1. This WAS a good cake. Too bad you didn’t have any :(

I heard the groom’s cake at our wedding was awesome, but I didn’t get any of that, either.

Let’s share this tip with all future to-be-weds: have somebody who’s job is to save the couple a piece or two of each kind of cake. Otherwise, the only cake they’ll get is that tiny piece they feed to each other (assuming it doesn’t go up their nose).
